Our History

Ithaka’s story began in the early 1970s, when former Catholic priest Steve Handen opened his home in Colorado Springs to people experiencing poverty. What started as a shared home grew into a community where people from different backgrounds lived together, contributed what they could, and supported one another. A soup kitchen born from that effort eventually became Marian House. In 1981, Ithaka Land, Inc. was formally established, expanding its work by acquiring homes throughout the city.
Over the decades, Ithaka evolved from a volunteer-centered housing community into an organization offering housing and support for people working toward greater stability. After hiring its first full-time executive director in 2017, Ithaka launched a formal transitional housing program with case management in 2018. This marked an important shift: pairing a place to live with support to overcome barriers and build a more independent future, while carrying forward its founding commitment to dignity and opportunity.
